Foosball Game Modes: From 1v1 to 4v4

In Foosball Online foosball is played by two people or by eight. The table is the same in every mode; what changes is who has which rod. This guide covers the four modes, how the rods are shared, the room rules and the ways to play on your own.

Four sizes of table

Matches are 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4. The same foosball is played by two people and by eight; only the division of work differs. Up to eight players play at one table, and spectators can follow the match live.

How the rods are shared between players

Each team has four rods: goalkeeper, defence, midfield and attack. They are shared out by how many play in the team:

The room's host can change the split: tapping a rod on a player's card takes it from their teammate and gives it to them. Nobody is ever left without a rod.

  • 1 player in the team: all four rods
  • 2 players: one has the goalkeeper and defence, the other the midfield and attack
  • 3 players: one has the goalkeeper and defence, the other two have the midfield and the attack
  • 4 players: everyone has one rod

Which mode suits you?

The four modes play at four different speeds; choose by what you are after:

  • 1v1: you run everything yourself and your skill shows most. Ranked play and room tournaments are 1v1
  • 2v2: division of work and communication matter; there is a ranked 2v2 ladder too
  • 3v3: busy, but sharing the rods is still easy; ideal for groups of friends
  • 4v4: the table fills completely and everyone focuses on a single rod; fast and fun

Room rules: score, time and overtime

When you create a room you choose the score limit (3, 5, 7 or 10 goals), the time (3, 5, 6, 10 minutes or unlimited), overtime when the scores are level, and golden goal. When time runs out the team ahead wins; if it is level, overtime is played, and with golden goal on the first goal ends the match.

Ranked matches are played to the same rules for everyone: first to 5, five minutes, golden goal on, no spectators.

Playing on your own

If you cannot find an opponent you do not have to wait. Quick Play finds a free table in the mode you chose; if a seat stays empty for 12 seconds a bot sits down in it and hands it over the moment a real player arrives. Practice against bots gives you a 1v1 at easy, normal or hard, and Local 2 Players lets two people play against each other on one computer.

Matches with a bot in them are not written to statistics or match history, and ranked rooms never have bots.

Questions about foosball modes

How are the rods split in 2v2 foosball?

One player has the goalkeeper and the two defence figures, the other the five-man midfield and the three-man attack. The room's host can change the split.

How many people can play online foosball?

From 1v1 to 4v4, so between two and eight players. More people can watch the match live as spectators.

Do matches with bots count?

No. Matches with a bot in them are not written to statistics or match history, and ranked matches never have bots.

Can I play 2v2 on my own?

Choose 2v2 in Quick Play and bots fill the empty seats, handing them over when real players arrive. In ranked 2v2 the system pairs you with a partner of your level.
