How Lag and Fair Play Work in Online Foosball

When you play foosball over the internet, the first questions are usually these: does lag spoil the match, can my opponent cheat, and what happens if I lose my connection? This article explains in plain terms how Foosball Online deals with each of them.

Who runs the match?

The server is the single source of truth for the match: the physics is worked out there 60 times a second. Your browser only sends what you want to do (slide the rod, kick), and the server decides where the ball is and whether a goal was scored. That way everyone sees the same match and nobody can change the content of the game.

Why do your kicks feel instant?

Ping is the delay between the moment you press a key and the moment the server handles it. To hide that delay, your browser runs the same game engine a few steps ahead and shows your kick at once; it then compares that with the picture the server sends 30 times a second and smooths out any difference.

If the server comes up with a different result from the one you saw (for instance, you learn late that your opponent touched the ball at the last moment), you may see a small jump; that is normal, and the decision always rests with the server. Spectators watch the match with a short delay and a smoothed picture.

Bringing your ping down

You cannot remove lag completely, but you can reduce it. The steps below make a difference on most connections.

  • Use a wired connection or a strong Wi-Fi signal if you can
  • Stop background downloads and video streams
  • Keep the game tab in front; if you switch tabs, the game catches up with the server when you return
  • Turn off battery saver on a phone
  • If the device is slow, lower the quality under Settings → Graphics

If you lose your connection

If your connection drops, your seat is held for 20 seconds: the other players see you as disconnected and a countdown shows on screen. When you come back, your team, your rods and the match in progress are all still there. Switching to another tab and coming back is safe too.

A player who does not press a key for a minute during a match is flagged as away; the host decides what to do about it.

Fair play and reports

Because the client only sends intent and the server checks and limits every request it gets, cheats such as speed hacks or teleporting become very hard. Bad behaviour is still possible, so any player can report another from their card (abuse, cheating, spam or other).

The server adds the reported player's last ten chat lines from the room to a report itself, so the reporter does not write the evidence. Administrators review reports and can ban a player if needed.

Questions about lag and fair play

What ping should I have?

The lower the better. At a high ping your kicks still feel instant, but the server makes more corrections and the picture may jump now and then.

Why does my opponent seem to teleport?

Usually because of a high ping or packet loss on your connection or theirs. It is not cheating: the server works out the figures and the ball, and browsers only send intent.

Can people cheat in the game?

Changing the content of the game from the client is very hard because the server checks every input. If you see cheating or bad behaviour, you can report the player from their card.

Do I lose the match if I disconnect?

Not at once. Your seat is held for 20 seconds, and if you come back in that time you carry on from where you left off.
